Here is the list of three examples of what I consider to be good and simple designs but very effective for common tasks.

Candle Holder

There are different types of candle holders with different shapes and colours, but I have decided to talk about this double candle holder, as I thought it was a curious and convenient design the first time I saw it.

The design of this candle holder is very simple but functional at the same time. A small dual-purpose candle holder. It does not only works for candlesticks but also tealights. The shape of it is rounded which works harmonically well with the candles. The diameter of the tealight holder side is wider than the candlestick holder’s side, meaning that the customer can use a long candlestick feeling safe as the base of it would be wide enough to hold it properly and safely.

This product was made out of glass, very thick glass, which makes it look elegant as it reflects the glow of the candle flame well, not wasting any bit of light from the candle, especially the tealights. Also, it has a neatly integrated aluminum candle cup for the candlestick side, which contributes to the elegant design as well. It does not have any decoration or pattern imprinted on it, meaning that the candle will always be the point of attention, allowing people to use the colours of the candles to add a pop of colour to any room, making it a lovely touch for a special occasion or just a cozy day.

The price of this product is affordable as it is only £1 and you can find it at IKEA stores, or at least the one shown in the picture above. Based on the price of this candleholder I can conclude that the cost of the manufacturing of this product must be low cost so they could get a gross profit from it.

There are other styles of this dual function candleholder, like the one shown in the image below. The shape was changed, and the only difference in the material is that instead of clear glass, it is tinted clear glass, making the product more appealing.

Image taken from Ikea.com – Product: ÄDELHET

Spirit Level

As a person who enjoys making Do-It-Yourself projects, the spirit level has become a common and important object in my daily life. The simple design of it makes it easy to use and easy to store.

A spirit level is a tool used to show how parallel or perpendicular a surface is. The vials in a spirit level are filled with a mineral spirit solution with additives for UV protection, leaving just enough room for a bubble to form. These vials will have center marks which will show the user how to level the surface depending on the position of the bubble.

I normally use the spirit level that is shown in the image above. It is a Torpedo Level, which is good for using in tight spaces as it is just a a bit bigger than the pocket size spirit levels. It is made of plastic so it is not heavy to carry, non-conductive and non-corrosive. It has three vials, perpendicular, parallel, and 45 degrees, making it perfect for simple projects like making a table to more complex projects such as plumbery and electrical projects. The design of this spirit level includes a magnetic working edge for hands-free use on metal surfaces and a v-groove frame to fit on pipes.

There are different styles of spirit levels, for example, box beam levels, line levels, and i-beam levels, with some variations in the design, such as shape, size, extra features, but all of them have the same main functionality which is helping to get a perfect job done.

The design of this tool is so simple that it can be reduced to the size of a keychain and still being useful, as long as the bubble is working and the center marks are easily visible.

Image taken from johnsonlevel.com – Spirit level keychain

Picture Hanging Strips

I love hanging a lot of frames with photographs of my family and friends, but I do not like using nails for it, because if I change mind and I want to put the frame in another place then holes will be left in the wall, and I will have to use a filler, spending more money and time. This is why picture hanging strips are very handy.

A picture hanging strip normally is a set of interlocking strips, they have one side made of foam, and the other side includes an adhesive, the adhesive side would be the one that is going to be glued to the wall and to the frame, and the foam side will be pressed together, so it will lock in place.

This product is very easy to use, some simple instructions have to be followed so the frame can be hunged properly, these instructions include to clean the wall, to click the foam together, to stick it on the frame, and then press it firmly against the wall. To take the frame down it has to be lifted from the bottom corners. And to remove the adhesive side that is left on the wall the top of the strip has to be lightly pressed and grab the bottom at the same time while pulling down slowly. No adhesive will be left on the wall and no loss of paintwork.

This easy-to-use product will help customers to avoid drilling holes and hammering nails, damaging the wall and the paint. It is very convenient when you are renting a place or just changing constantly the layout of a room.

The design of this product is very simple but effective, it’s just a small strip with a foam side and an adhesive side. The adhesive and foam are of good quality as it can hold frames up to 18″ x 24″ and 5 kg, and it is compatible with different surfaces such as metal, glass, and tiles. This product can also, be found in different sizes depending on how big the frame is.

Good designs often mean simple solutions.
